Different Dog Coat Types and How to CARE for them at Home

There are many different coat types among the multitude of various dog breeds we share our lives with.

Today we will discuss the -1- six main coat types, -2- how to identify your dog’s coat type, -3- what are the proper methods to care for your dog’s coat -4- and what tools and products align with maintaining your specific dog’s coat at home.

It is important to understand what coat type your dog has and how to properly maintain it.

The purpose of every dog’s coat in a nutshell is to protect the dog’s skin and to regulate body temperature. Remember…the skin is the largest organ in your dog’s body and ultimately one of the most important as well.

The skin and coat play a crucial part in your dog’s overall health and well-being.

Your dog’s coat protects the skin from infections, parasites, sun, and other harmful elements your dog will come in contact with daily. It shields your dog from injury and disease.

Your dog’s coat has a purpose…if we take that coat from your dog through improper grooming practices, we would be opening the door of potentially harming your dog.

The Six Dog Coat Types are…
• Hairless
• Smooth
• Wire-Haired
• Long-Coated
• Curly-Coated
• Double-Coated

Hairless Dogs
There are several breeds that fall under the hairless category. The Chinese Crested is one of the most commonly seen, followed closely by the Mexican Hairless (Show-low). These dogs, depending on the breed, might be entirely hairless (other than a stray hair here and there) or may have tufts of hair. The Chinese Crested has a wonderful topknot (hence the name crested) of hair on the head that grows quite long.

Haircare for the tufted dogs isn’t difficult; just comb the tufts to keep them free of mats. In lieu of hair care, hairless dogs do need skincare, however. They need to be protected from sunburn using a dog-safe sunblock. One of the reasons so many hairless dogs can be seen wearing dog clothes is both because the dogs can get cold but also to protect them from the sun and sunburn.

  1. Can you clip a chuchuhou (sorry if I spelt it wrong) or do you have to hand scissor them?
