So true!!! I have an 85lb reactive german shepherd and she pulls from time to time and it takes a lot more out of me to use a slip lead. She doesn’t care if she’s choking herself out or dragging me. So much more skill, attention, and energy has to be given when using a slip leash with a strong powerful dog. Usually slip leads are designed for dogs under 50lbs.
Hey! Great video. Iām really conflicted right now because for the past year, iāve been learning a lot about training regarding my 11 year old reactive dog. Iāve had two professional trainers use the prong with her, but now Iām seeing so much online about how prongs are abusive. Iāve seen many people say that prong collars only suppress feelings, and although it is a communication tool, your dog is simply listening to you because they donāt want to feel that pop again. Yes, it works, but iāve heard it can make my dog more fearful or hurt our relationship, and sheās old and the last thing I want is to make her feel scared, sad, or confused.
Can I get your opinion on the prong collar? Is non-corrective training better for dogs? Is it nicer to not use it?
Two working type American bulldogs.. one small female 20 inches tall a teenager.. one almost 25 inch tall male a toddler.. yes you have to be on a slip leash constantly and I often have to pop the leash, but they are much better they know what gentle means.. they don’t always follow that camandš š
I have a reactive mix breed dog 28kg with extremely high prey drive. Face halti does nothing but make reactivity worse and the slip lead he will literally choke himself out. Been working with him for almost 5 years and we just use a 50mm flat collar with a handle as prong collars are banned in Australia. His reactivity has improved hugely but the prey drive, nothing works when it comes to the pulling, even a high setting on an e-collar.
Thank you so much for saying this! We have worked with so many trainers that are so set on using or not using certain tools and methods and make you feel bad for wanting or needing to do something else. Our last dog did really well with a harness/ a slip leash. Our current dog is very leash reactive and a harness and slip leash are no match for him. We have had to adjust our training and use what works for him and us. Please don’t let anyone/any trainers put you down or judge you for doing what you need to do for you and your dog.
